The wonders of wine have endured since around 6000 BC. It makes for a peaceful day or a nice end to a not-so-peaceful day.

Today Wine is one of the most consumed adult beverages in the World.

Whenever a major occasion arises such as a birthday, anniversary, or even New Years’ Eve, you will see people drinking all sorts of wine.

For example, being Italian, I was brought up with relatives drinking wine. It didn’t have to be a special occasion.

MEMORIES

I remember going to my “Little Aunt Mary’s” house on Sundays. ( I say “Little Aunt Mary” because I had two Aunt Marys with the same last name. Firstly, one was my natural aunt. Secondly, the other, who was about 4 feet, something tall was my other aunt by marriage). So when speaking about them, that is how we distinguished who we were talking about.

Well here is the scenario. We’d enter her house, HA HEY how ya doing? Sit, Sit. So we sat around the kitchen table. That was always the main place in any of our houses.

Sensations

Picture this, I’m about 10 years old. So we’re sitting around the table and she brings out first a big loaf of Italian bread, mmm. Then she brings out some sliced cheese and homemade Sopressata. My family on both sides is from Calabria, so this was a treat.

They would get together at different houses and make it in their cellars where it was cool and damp. That was just right for the sausage to cure.

OK, so here we have Italian bread, slices of cheese, and Sopressata. She now follows this with Espresso for those who wanted coffee. Above all, the biggest picture of Red Wine to pour into our glasses. She goes to pour me some and my mother says.. no.. she says .. ma sure, go ahead it’s good for him. So here I had my first taste of Italian Wine. 10 years old, I didn’t have a lot but it was enough. Buona Fortuna!

However, I feel that the right wine is the wine that tastes best with the meal.
