TV – History

TV – a window to the imagination, to wonderment, beauty and the unknown.

Back When There Was Just Radio

Summer was a great time growing up. I’d run and play all over. Back then we didn’t have to be concerned about kidnappers or a bunch of traffic.

There were woods galore and the fresh smell of flowers and cut grass.

My sister, cousins and I would go into the woods behind our houses and pick blueberries and blackberries and grapes that were good for making wine.

We’d pick them right off the vines, yum.

After picking the blueberries and putting them in a bucket my sister and I would take them home for my mom to use to make a blueberry cake or to put them over some ice cream. Boy, that was fun.

We’d have dinner, some blueberry cake for dessert and then after all the dishes were washed as well as us kids, we would listen to the radio.

.

No TV only Radio

.

At that time, in the ’40s, there was no tv to watch. We had to use our imagination.

I remember getting put up on the kitchen sink counter. Sitting there with my mom and dad and sister listening to “THE SHADOW” that was thrilling!

On Saturdays, I would sit up there listening to “THE LONE RANGER” YAHOO!!

In addition, we’d listen to The Milton Berle Show, Richard Bernard “Red” Skelton, Fibber McGee and Molly Radio Show.

Those were fun times.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, people started to talk about something called the television.

.

What the heck was a television?

.

People were saying that you could actually SEE people live on it, huh??

Now that started to sound exciting to me because then I would be able to see the famous people I would listen to all the time on the radio.

For example, The Lone Ranger, The Roy Rogers Show, cowboys was the best thing for us small boys. We’d go around with our shiny plastic guns playing Cowboys and Indians.

Now with the advent of the tv, we would really be able to see what they looked like so we could be exactly like them.

.

The Cost

.

The only problem was that the television was big, bulky and cost a lot, so we couldn’t get one for quite a while.

Everyone was talking about how fantastic their tv was. I was so envious.

.

Then in 1948, we had a big surprise!

.

.

My dad had gotten us a “Television”!!!

Later to become known as the telly, idiot box, the tube and my favorite “The Boob Tube

.

Who cared, I was in 7th heaven, especially when later on I got to see SUPERMAN…OH NOW, THAT WAS AWESOME!

Now I could fly around the yard with my cape flying behind me, jumping off a pile of dirt pretending to be Superman…FUN TIMES!

.

Time Marches On…

.

As time went on televisions got less bulky and there were loads more shows.

However, at that time there were 3 television stations to watch ABC, CBS & NBC.

It was easy to select programs. There weren’t many stations to choose from.

Onto Bigger and Better Things

.

1950-53 – FCC approves first two color television standards.

.

OMG – COLOR??? What will they think of next? Technology is unbelievable!

.

This is awesome now instead of seeing American Band Stand in black and white I could see it in color.

.

Fast forward TV to the present day.
